TJC, TVCC volleyball advance to fifth place game

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The TJC and TVCC campus may be only about 35 miles apart, but they will be competing in Kansas for fifth place in the NJCAA Division I national volleyball tournament.

Both Tyler Junior College and Trinity Valley Community College won on Friday to advance to the fifth-place game, which is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

No. 7 TJC (29-7) defeated No. 3 Polk State (Florida) (22-8), 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 19-25, 25-19).

Leaders for TJC were Kariely Santana (10 kills, 5 digs), Taya Mitchell (6 kills, 2 digs), Breeana Gamueda (20 kills), Anya Olsen (16 kills, 5 digs), Isabela Dobra (46 assists, 13 digs) and Maci Matherne (19 digs).

No. 9 TVCC (27-7) upset No. 4 Navarro (38-6) 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-16, 25-22).

Leaders for TVCC were Juliana Vaz (13 kills, 10 digs), Yasmim da Silva (13 kills), Ana Paula Zandona (46 assists), Lauren Castles (12 kills) and Audry Lopez (12 digs).

Navarro will play for seventh place against Polk State at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
