Lakeland Falls to Owens

KIRTLAND, Ohio – The Lakeland Community College volleyball team was in action today as they hosted second ranked Owens Community College. 

The Lakers showed no fear as they jumped out to a quick 2-0 first set lead.  The Express responded and went on an 8-1 run to make the score 8-3 and forced a Lakeland timeout. After the timeout, the Lakers scored five straight points to tie the match, at 8 points apiece. Lakeland was unable to pull ahead and fell in the first set 25-17.

Once again the Lakers grabbed a 3-0 to open the second frame.  The set was a back and forth battle until Owens took a 9-8 lead. Lakeland continued to fight for the remainder of the second set, but were unable to come back and fell 25-14.

 After the Lakers opened the scoring in the third set, the Express rattled off eight straight points, to take command of the final frame. Owens continued to pull away, and won the final set 25-11. 

Cary Morin (Burton, Ohio / Newbury) led the Lakers offense with six kills in the match.  Morin also tallied a block and four digs for Lakeland.  Defensively, Nicolette Waite (Willoughby, Ohio / South) led the way with 16 digs in the match.   

Lakeland will return to the court Saturday (Oct. 22) when they travel to take on Edison with the match set to start at 11 a.m.
