Prince George’s Men’s Soccer Returns To Action

Prince George’s Men’s Soccer Returns To Action

A new semester for Prince George's Community College began August 22nd and along with it comes a new sense of urgency from Owls men's soccer coach Cedric Mansaray after a challenging 2021 season saw the Owls return to play after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. While the majority of the Owls opponents were able to hold a spring 2021 season to build upon in the fall, COVID-19 levels in Prince George's County kept the Owls from taking the pitch which proved costly for the program last season.

Now armed after a full year of recruiting and head coaching experience, Mansaray is confident in his team to return as a powerhouse within the Region and conference. The Owls 2022 roster features seven returners with starting experience from last year's squad; midfielders Saul Viera, Jonathan Diaz, Eric Hernandez, Juan Lainez-Cardenas, and defenders Anthony Urrutia-Zelaya, Eric Jimenez, and Iremitide Oyewole. Diaz, an Oxon Hill graduate, was one of four Owls selected to the Division III All-Region 20 First Team following the season and will be one of the sophomores the Owls look to as the season begins.

After struggling to produce many scoring opportunities in 2021, Mansaray has added a handful of strikers from the local area to help improve upon the Owls 29 goals scored from a year ago.

Prince George's will get their first chance to showcase their renewed squad on Tuesday, August 30th when the Owls travel to La Plata to take on the College of Southern Maryland at 4 PM before returning home where they'll face their next seven opponents. The Owls open up their home stretch against Carroll Community College on September 1st followed by Montgomery College (9/6) and CCBC Catonsville (9/8) with a week off before hosting Frederick Community College on the 15th. The Owls round out the homestand against Cecil College (9/20), Chesapeake College (9/22), and NOVA (9/24). Prince George's will have its first Region 20 Division III contest on September 27th when the Owls travel to Anne Arundel to take on the Riverhawks followed by another away game against CCBC Essex on the 29th.

Prince George's opens up October with a Region 20 divisional game at home against Allegany College of Maryland on Tuesday the 4th before heading to Howard Community College on the 6th. A battle of the Owls will take place the following week for Prince George's final home game against Harford Community College on October 13th. The Owls then take one more road trip to Hagerstown Community College on October 18th to wrap up the regular season.

This year's NJCAA Region 20 Division III Men's Soccer Tournament will be played at Anne Arundel Community College on October 27-29 which will include Region 12 and 17 to determine the Mid-Atlantic District Champion. The winner will receive a bid to the national tournament from November 9-13, hosted by Genesee Community College (Batavia, NY).
