MCC baseball splits doubleheader against Lamar CC

The McCook Community College baseball team was able to salvage the final game of a three-game set with Lamar Community College, splitting a pair of games Saturday. Lamar won the first game 8-2 and MCC came back to win the second game 14-4. Lamar opened the series Friday with a 3-2 win in 10 innings.
This series was moved from Lamar to McCook because of field conditions in Colorado.

On Saturday the Running Lopes took a 2-0 series lead with six strong innings from 6-9 left-hander Max Huffling who struck out 11 Indians and allowed one earned run. In the finale, sophomore Kade Wroot (North Platte) drove in four runs, on a two-run home run and a two-run double as MCC scored seven times in the sixth inning.
Lamar goes to 4-6 on the year. MCC is 6-6.

The Indians will next take on Garden City Wednesday at 3 p.m. in a nine-inning game. On Saturday Otero Junior College comes to town for an Empire League doubleheader with a pair of games starting at 1 p.m. Saturday and a nine-inning game Sunday (1 p.m.).

GAME 1 Lamar CC 8, McCook CC 2: The Lopes scored a pair of runs in the first, three in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth off three MCC pitchers to back Lamar's Max Heffling.
The Indians were held to four hits on the day, a double by Pedro Perez (sophomore Cidra, Puerto Rico Baseball Academy); and singles by Kade Wroot, Caleb Eiguren (freshman, Westminster, Colo.) and Ryan Nourse (sophomore, Centennial, Colo.).
MCC scored runs in the sixth inning on a pair of singles and a wild pitch and in the seventh on three walks and a passed ball.
Jayden Bastow (sophomore, Clearwater, Fla.) was charged with five runs in two innings; sophomores Connor McGonigal (Omaha Burke) and Anthony Kingsbury (Gatineau, Quebec) both pitched an inning and both game up a run.
Holden Hopkins (sophomore, Norman, Okla.) went the final three innings and allowed two hits, no runs, four walks and he struck out four.

GAME 2 McCook 14, Lamar CC 4: The Indians put the game away with a seven-run sixth inning, in a game shortened by the 10-run rule. MCC scored in five of the six innings with two in the first, three in the third and added runs in both the fourth and fifth innings before putting the game away in the sixth.
Trevor Pacheco (sophomore, Pueblo, Colo.) stroked a first inning double and later came home to score, and Caleb Eiguren's RBI single made it 2-0.
Kade Wroot socked a two-run home run in the third to give the Indians a 4-0 lead and later that inning Aiden Ferry (freshmen, Monroe, Wash.) lined a two-run solo homer to make it 5-0.
On the mound, Isaac Vargas (sophomore, Greeley, Colo.) pitched three scoreless innings to start the game before surrendering three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. He allowed nine hits, and four earned runs in five innings of work. He struck out six. Mitchell Driver (freshman, Sydney, Australia) came on to pitch a hitless, scoreless sixth inning, striking out one.
MCC pushed across a run in the fourth on a single by Elijah Munoz (freshman, Big Spring, Texas) and a sacrifice fly from Pacheco. That gave MCC a 6-3 lead but MCC gave that run back in the top of the fifth with a Lamar solo home run. Wroot was hit by a pitch to lead off the MCC fifth and scored on a Ferry single to give the Indians a 7-4 lead.
Root delivered a two-run double to start the fireworks in the MCC sixth. The Indians took advantage of four Lamar walks but had doubles from Pedro Perez and Brandon Reynolds (freshman, Monument, Colo.).
MCC had 11 hits with two each from Wroot, Ferry and Munoz.
