The River Advances With 9-6 Win Over FSW

CLEARWATER, FL - Continuing their impressive run in the FCSAA State Tournament, the Indian River Pioneers secured another victory, this time topping Florida Southwestern, the defending NJCAA Division I Softball National Champions. The Pioneers wasted no time getting on the board, with Presley Smith's sacrifice fly in the first inning signaling their intent to take the lead early. J'dah Girigorie's groundout in the second inning was crucial, as it helped the Pioneers to draw level at two runs apiece. The game's turning point came in the fifth inning when a series of singles by Maddox Thomas, Ciara Gendron, and Girigorie, coupled with a passed ball, allowed the Pioneers to surge ahead with some insurance runs. The Pioneers' bats were on fire throughout the game, racking up a total of 12 hits. Sarah Phipps, Thomas, Smith, and Ariana Murillo were particularly noteworthy, each securing two hits and contributing to the team's offensive display.

Not to be outdone by their hitting, the Pioneers also demonstrated strategic patience and discipline at the plate, earning four walks, with Cassidy Patterson leading the way with two. The Pioneers' aggressive base-running was a highlight of the game, as evidenced by their six stolen bases, three of which were credited to Patterson. On the pitching front, Ciara Gendron stepped up to secure the win. Taking over as reliever, Gendron managed to keep the Buccaneers at bay, allowing four hits, two runs, and a strike out over four innings.

The River will compete again in the FCSAA South Atlantic District A Championship game on Friday at 4:00 p.m. vs Northwest Florida State
