YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Lady Matadors Softball team (2-5) split a pair of games on the second day of the Chapman Automotive Great Western Shootout, falling to Southern Nevada 16-0 before finishing the day with a 7-5 win over Southern Nevada.
The Lady Matadors were held to three hits in the first game of the day in a loss to Southern Idaho. Kaity McClaughlin, MacKenzie Vela, and Mackenzie Barney each picked up singles in the loss.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and added three more in the second, and two in the third before finishing the game with six in the fourth inning.
The Matadors opened the scoring early in the second game of the day against Southern Nevada, scoring three runs in the first inning on a Veronica Eddy three-run homer. The Lady Matadors added four more in the third inning on a Vonyea Pina run-scoring single and a Valerie Joaquin two-run single before McLaughlin knocked in the final Lady Matadors' run with a double.
Southern Nevada scored three of their five runs in the seventh but the Lady Matadors were able to hold on for the win.
Arizona Western wraps up play at the Chapman Automotive Great Western Shootout on Saturday, February 3, hosting Salt Lake at 1:00 pm at the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex.
