Erie Men Finish Second, Women Fourth at Region 3 Championships
The Erie Community College men's swimming and diving team posted six individual wins and three relay victories on its way to a second place finish at the Region 3 Championships. It was the highest finish for the Kats since a runner up finish in 2007. The women finished fourth as a team.
The championship was a four-session meet held over three days at Monroe Community College. Monroe won the men's event with 618 points followed by the Kats with 456 and Jamestown Community College with 404.5 points.
Session 1
The highlight of the opening session was a dominating 800-Free Relay performance by the Kats. Ryan Nebrich, Alec Sedki, Stu Jensen and Leo Wash teamed up to finish the race in 7:40.87, which cleared the field by more than a minute.
Earlier in the session, Sedki picked up the first of his three wins in the 200 Individual Medley in 2:10..21. Isabella DeMeo was second in women's 1,000 Free and Nebrich and Jensen took second and third, respectively in the men's 1,000 Free. Nathan Setlock earned his first national qualification time in the 1,000 Free as well.
Session 2
The closest race of the meet kicked off the second session as Erie's 200 Free Relay team of Nebrich, Sedki, Jensen and Wasch touched the wall first in 1:35.61 – just .01 seconds ahead of second place Monroe.
Erie swept the men's and women's 200-Free Relay events. DeMeo touched first for the women in 2:16.61 and Nebrich won the men's event in 1:52.49. Sedki took second in the 50 Back and Jensen was second in the 400 IM.
Mark Zeder made his first national time cut in the 50-Yard Breast time trial.
Session 3
A pair of individual wins by the Kats highlighted session three. Nebrich won the 500 Free in 5:09.65 and Sedki touched first in the 100 Back in 57.45.
It was a one-two finish for the Kats in the 500 Free as Jensen came in second. Wasch took second in the 100 IM and DeMeo was second in the women's 500 Free.
Session 4
Erie finished the meet with one more commanding relay performance. Nebrich, Sedki, Jensen and Wasch finished the meet by winning the 400-Yard Free Relay in 3:28.32.Sedki
Earlier in the session, Wasch won the 100 Free in 51.54 and Sedki picked up his third win of the meet in the 200 Backstroke in 2:07.45.
DeMeo and Nebrich each took second in the women's and men's 1,650 Free, respectively.
Following the meet, Erie Head Coach Rick Aronberg and Assistant Coach Vinnie McCarthy were named the Region 3 Men's Coaching Staff of the Year.
