DMACC BASEBALL TEAM DEFEATS ECC IN REGION XI ELIMINATION GAME

Freshman Jack Johnson of St. Paul, Minn., and sophomore Andrew Penney of Fargo, N.D., drove in two runs apiece to lead the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team to a 9-5 win over Ellsworth Community College (ECC) in an elimination game in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI Baseball Tournament May 12 at Waterloo.

 

The win, DMACC's 29th of the season against 26 losses, keeps the Bears' championship dreams alive in the double-elimination tournament, which concludes May 14.

 

DMACC, seeded fifth, never trailed after scoring two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead. The Bears added three runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their advantage to 6-1. ECC rallied for four runs in the fifth to make it a 6-4 game, but was shutout the rest of the way by a trio of DMACC pitchers. The Bears closed out the win with two runs in the sixth and one in the eighth.

 

Penney, sophomore Michael Michalak of Rochester, Minn., and freshman Keil Krumwiede of Glasgow, Mont., had two hits apiece in the win and Michalak, Krumwiede and freshmen Carson Youngquist of Sussex, Wis., and Chris Witzke of Humboldt drove in one run apiece.

 

Sophomore Parker Sanburn of Kokomo, Ind., pitched the first four and two-thirds innings for DMACC, allowing five runs on three hits. He struck out three and walked five. Sophomore Jack Donahue of Marshfield, Wis., worked three and a third innings and improved to 3-0 with the win. He allowed one hit, struck out three and walked one. Freshman John Werner of Burlington pitched the final inning and recorded a strikeout.

 

DMACC will face Southeastern Community College (SECC) in an elimination game at noon on May 13. SECC is the tournament's No. 3 seed and DMACC won three of four games against SECC during the regular.
