Men’s Basketball gets first W in dominating fashion

After dropping the first two games of the season on the road, the Highland Men's basketball team was looking forward to getting back on their home court for the home opener against Ottawa University JV.
 
A banner reveal would start the night's festivities as HCC Athletics recognized last year's KJCCC Conference Championship Team with the unveiling of the new banner in the field house. 2016-2017 team members in attendance were; Leland Harvey, Ryan Haskins, Jarvis Johnson, Jaquan Daniels, Will Peabody, Andre Jackson and Colin jasper.
 
Highland came out hot jumping to a 33-8 lead over the Braves after back-to-back dunks by sophomore transfer Jaylin Rutherford half way through the first.
 
It didn't slow down for the Scotties throughout the half as Holden Redparth, Ryan Haskins and Dylan Owen knocked down two 3-pointers apiece to give Highland a 49-20 halftime lead.
 
Highland continued to dominate both sides of the ball in the second half forcing turnovers and out rebounding the Braves 29-11 in the second half and went on to win 93-62. They finished on top in the rebounding battle 48-26 and forced 17 turnovers on the night.
 
Four Scotties scored in double figures on the night. Taiveyhon Mason led the Scotties offensively scoring 16 points with four assists and four rebounds. Jaylin Rutherford finished with 14 points and four boards. Alonzo Williams put up 11 points and 9 boards while Holden Redparth added in 10 points and five rebounds.
 
The Scotties shot 47% from the floor and 37% from behind the arc on the night. They dished out 17 assists, had one block and nine steals.
 
Highland is back in action on the road this Friday & Saturday as they will play in the Kansas City Kansas Classic. They take on North Central Missouri College Friday at 4:00pm and Link Year Prep School Saturday at 2:00pm. Both games will be played on the campus of Kansas City Kansas Community College.
