TJC finishes 6th at NJCAA volleyball tournament

HUTCHINSON, Kan. The No. 9 seed Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals defeated the No. 7 Tyler Junior College Apache Ladies for fifth place on Saturday in the NJCAA Division I National Volleyball Tournament at Hutchinson Sports Arena.

TVCC rallied for 3-2 victory, 22-25, 15-25, 25-23, 25-23 and 15-10.

The Apache Ladies (29-8) finished sixth after placing fourth last year. TVCC was appearing in its first national tournament.

Leaders for TJC were: Taya Mitchell (15 kills, 3 digs), Breeana Gamueda (14 kills, 6 digs), Anya Olsen (12 kills, 2 digs), Isabela Dobra (53 assists, 15 digs), Madison Frusha (9 kills), Maci Matherne (19 digs) and Alissa Miramontez (17 digs).

Leaders for TVCC (28-7) were Juliana Vaz (25 kills, 21 digs), Yasmim da Silva (16 kills, 8 digs), Ana Paula Zandona (50 assists), Audry Lopez (18 digs), Livia Kumura (12 digs) and Erica Airheart (14 kills).

Earlier in the day, No. 3 Polk State (Florida) defeated No. 4 Navarro 3-1 in the seventh-place match.
