Softball Cements Playoff Spot With Sweep Over Wake Tech on Sophomore Day

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College softball team closes out the regular season 13-23 overall, 13-21 in conference play after hosting the Eagles from Wake Technical Community College Sunday afternoon, in the final regular season contest. In between the games, the softball team recognized sophomores; Lily Curtis, Emmalee Lawson, Emma Fleming, Jahaira Medrano, Casey Hart, Gracie Fisher, and Maggie Linthicum for their efforts and dedication to the program the last two years.

 

In game one, Richard Bland snatched the lead late in the game in a 7-5 victory over Wake Tech Sunday afternoon in front of a large home crowd. The game was tied at two with Richard Bland batting in the bottom of the fifth when Casey Hart singled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run. Despite falling down by five runs in the fifth inning, Wake Tech tried to fight back, scoring three runs on a double in the seventh inning. Richard Bland evened things up at two in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jenna Nicolski homered on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs. The Statesmen totaled seven hits in the game. Jessica Taggart and Jahaira Medrano had two hits each in the win to lead the offense. Maggie Linthicum led things off in the circle for Richard Bland. Linthicum surrendered two runs on five hits over three innings, striking out one and walking zero.

 

In game two, Richard Bland defeated the Eagles 10-4. Richard Bland fired up the offense in the first inning, when Jenna Nicolski homered on a 0-1 count, scoring three runs. Richard Bland notched three runs in the sixth inning. The rally was led by a triple by Lily Curtis and a home run by Godfrey. Richard Bland totaled 11 hits in the game. Godfrey, Emma Fleming, Gracie Fisher and Curtis all had two hits each to lead Richard Bland. Casey Hart earned the win for Richard Bland. The lefthander surrendered four runs on seven hits over five and a third innings, striking out seven and walking zero. Curtis threw one and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen.

 

With the sweep this afternoon, the Richard Bland College softball team next prepares for the first round of the Region 10 Tournament which will begin Friday, April 28th. The Statesmen await their final seeding and opponent which will be announced later this week.
