Highland Falls On the Road to Garden City

October 21

Box Score

Coming off the bye week the #14 Highland football team was ready to get back in action and had a tall task in front of them making the long trek to Garden City to play the #2 Broncbusters.

The contest opened with a three-and-out for the Scottie offense and Garden City then went seven plays down the field covering 55 yards and on a fourth and goal play at the one punched it in with a David Moore one-yard touchdown run to take the lead. The Broncobusters went for two but Highland stopped the conversion attempt making it 6-0 with 10:50 in the first quarter. Highland got on the board in a big way for their first points of the game as Ryan Schemtob booted a 54-yard field goal breaking his own school record by four-yards and giving him the longest field goal in the Nation at the NJCAA level.

Trailing 6-3 the Scotties hit a big play early in the second quarter as Kevin Brown busted a 73-yard run taking it to the house for the touchdown and with the extra point Highland led 10-6 with 14:11 left in the first half. The lead lasted just about three and a half minutes of game time for Highland as the Scotties saw Garden City punch in a two-yard touchdown run by Dedrick Mills to regain the lead at 13-10 with 10:44 left in the first half. Garden City then forced a punt from Highland and the Broncbusters busted a punt return for a touchdown making it 21-10 after a two-point conversion.

Scotties had an answer as Avery McCall finished a six play drive with a seven-yard touchdown run with the offensive line getting a second push on the run to get McCall the final yards and into the endzone making it a four-point deficit for Highland. The Scotties looked to try and cut the lead to one before halftime but a Schemtob 32-yard field goal went off the right upright and Highland still trailed by four. Garden City took over and went down the field before halftime to push their lead back to double figures as Moore hit Keyshawn Jones for a 40-yard touchdown pass and Highland trailed 28-17 at the half.

Second half started off with a bang for Highland as the Scotties forced the first turnover off the game with Jonathan Thompson jarring the ball loose and Damarion Williams scooping it up and returning it 24-yards for the fourth defensive touchdown of the season for the Highland defense. The Scotties once again were within four and then the defense came up big again as Andrew Kerebo recovered a fumble setting up the Highland offense again. Scotties then went for a 49-yard field goal and misfired but a roughing the kicker penalty kept the drive alive and the Highland got to the 16-yard line only to be moved backwards and attempt a 48-yard field which came up short.

Garden City then answered with a tally on the board with a  59-yard touchdown run to lead again by 11-points with 8:50 in the third quarter. Each team scored again in the third as McCall connected with Tra Parker for 55-yards for a touchdown strike for Highland, while Mills scored a one-yard touchdown run for Garden City and entering the fourth quarter Highland trailed 41-31. Garden City did the rest of the scoring as Ben Raybon hit a 33-yard field goal and Ellis Merriweather ran for two yard touchdown after the Scotties were driving and at the 11-yard line but a fumble by Highland was picked up by Garden City and returned to the two-yard line setting up the final score.

In the loss the Scottie offense gained 356 yards including 205 as a team on the ground with Brown pacing the team rushing for 211 yards on 22 carries with a touchdown. McCall finished 10-31 for 151 yards with a passing and rushing touchdown. Garden City compiled 499 total yards of offense rushing for 365 yards but the Scottie defense did force a pair of Broncbuster turnovers. Donnell Lowery led the Scottie defense with 11 tackles, while Jahmal Wynter notched eight tackles and Darius Johnson had seven tackles.

The loss sends the Scotties to 4-3 on the season and 2-3 in KJCCC action with all three losses coming to teams currently ranked 13th or higher in the latest NJCAA rankings. After three straight road games the Scotties return home next week to host Dodge City on Saturday, October 27th with a 1:00pm kickoff. The game will be homecoming at Highland and will be streamed on the Scottie Sports Network.
