Generals defeat Red Barons at home 91-59

HERKIMER, NY – Improving their current win streak on Saturday (11/22) in the varsity gym, the Herkimer Generals men's basketball team took care of Mid-State Athletic Conference foe Corning Community College 91-59, snapping a five-game win streak of the Red Barons in the process.

Herkimer (6-1, 3-0) jumped out to a 10 point lead within the first five minutes (12-2) on made shots by Jamell Johnson (Rochester, NY), Ken Woodard (Bronx, NY) and Dantre Langhorne (Greenport, NY). Both Langhorne and Woodard got the crow to their feet on two separate occasions with dunks, one an alley oop from Carson Murphy (Mohawk, NY). Woodard led the Generals with 14, followed by Johnson's 13.

Herkimer managed to build the lead to 13 points by intermission with shots made by both Murphy and Kainan McCarthy (Mohawk, NY). Murphy drove the full length of the court, connecting with the left hand on a layup with 7.2 left, while McCarthy corralled an offensive rebound to get his field goal. Murphy finished with seven and McCarthy finished with six.

The Generals started the second half with a three-point field goal by Jallah Tarver (Schenectady, NY), building the lead to 22 in the first five minutes. Tarver finished the game with 11, scoring seven in the second half. Another three pointer by Johnson with 12:07 left made it 67-30, helping the sophomore to three made shots from long distance which was tied for the team lead with Daniel Owens (Albany, NY).

The game ended with Herkimer getting outscored 19-to-13 in the final 10 minutes, with most of the bench players getting quality minutes against the Red Barons starters before they were taken out with four minutes left. It helped Herkimer see 11 players score in the game.

Up next for the Generals on Sunday (11/23) is the second best team in the region, Finger Lakes Community College. The Lakers have yet to lose a game this season, beating Monroe at home in their first game of the regular season, something the Generals were unable to do against the Tribunes. The two best teams in the region will square off in the varsity gym at 2 p.m.
