Jefferson Women's Basketball Sophomore Night

Lady Cannoneer Sophomores Recognized

Tuesday night was Sophomore night at The McVean Center Gymnasium. The Lady Cannoneers celebrated each of their 5 sophomores, and their accomplished 2 year careers here at Jefferson. Surrounded by family and friends, and one of the years best crowds each sophomore gathered well deserved recognition for their time spent as a student-athlete within the women's basketball program.

Broome posed a tough matchup for the Lady Cannoneer's as they looked to finish off a stellar second semester, and wrap up their MSAC play for the year. Jefferson found themselves in a quick 11-0 hole to start the game. The ball would start to find the basket for the lady cannoneers after a slow several minutes. Behind swift ball movement and some easy baskets in transition the lead would be cut too 15-14 Broome at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter would play out similar to the end of the first quarter with Jefferson taking a 31-26 lead into the halftime break. Transition baskets started to come easy for Jefferson as they capitalized on their best attribute this year, defensive rebounding.

In the second half both teams would battle back and forth for much of the third quarter, and early fourth quarter. Broome couldn't cut into the lead for any length of time, but Jefferson was having trouble pulling away as well. The last offensive surge of the game came with about 6 minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Lady Cannoneers would pull away as their lead would grow to 12 coming down the home stretch. Jefferson would walk away with a 64-52 home victory to wrap up a 10-2 MSAC record, and a second place overall finish. Sophomore Chelsey Raven led the way with 19 points, and 14 rebounds. Ashlyn Eyles, and Alyson Crosby chipped in 18, and 14 points respectfully as Crosby hauled down 21 rebounds! Freshman Bailey Zicari also nabbed a season/career high 12 rebounds, while freshman Izzy Soluri chipped in 12 points!

The Lady Cannoneers will wait for a day or two to find out their Region 3 fate as the Regional tournament looms in the near future. A 5 seed looks like a good possibility with a quarterfinal matchup still to be determined.
