NJCAA announces upcoming championship changes

Charlotte, NC - Following the NJCAA Convention in Birmingham, AL, the NJCAA has announced several adjustments to national tournament formats and policies as approved by the Championship & Sports Governance Committee and the Board of Regents.

Baseball 

  • Division I implements official video replay review beginning in 2023
  • Division II expands to 12-team bracket 

Men's and Women's Basketball

  • Division I men's, women's basketball implements media timeout policy throughout national tournament 
  • Division II men's, women's basketball expands to 20-team bracket

Division I, II Men's, and Division I Women's Golf

  • Permits student-athletes to use cell phones while on the course for live scoring 
  • DI men's golf adjusts automatic qualifier numbers 

Division III Women's Tennis 

  • Moves championship to the spring semester, held in conjunction with DIII men's tennis

Men's and Women's Soccer 

  • All divisions men's, women's soccer adds day to national tournament to implement a second rest day 
  • All divisions men's, women's soccer increase spring competition to six dates 
  • All divisions men's, women's soccer votes not to adopt NCAA's overtime rule change 
  • Division III men's, women's soccer reinstates 3rd place consolation game

Softball

  • Division I, II expands to 20-team bracket
  • All divisions move to 60 total games allowed in the spring semester, 14 dates allowed in the fall semester 

Volleyball

  • Division I adds day to national tournament; increases at-large selections
  • Division II expands to 20-team bracket 
  • Division III expands to 16-team bracket 

Emerging Sports

  • Clay target, competitive cheer approve to delay first competition season until 2023-24
  • Women's flag football, men's volleyball, women's wrestling confirm 2022-23 as first competition season 
  • Women's wrestling approves LOI allowances
