When a release agreement from an LOI is needed

The NJCAA National Office is providing this chart as a tool to assist member colleges in clarifying the appropriate reason and application for release from an NJCAA Letter of Intent.  

 

REASON FOR RELEASE

WHEN APPLICABLE

STUDENT-ATHLETE SIGNATURE REQUIRED?

Graduation

May be used beginning with the day following the official graduation from the college.

Not Required

Withdrawal

May be used beginning with the day following the official withdrawal from the college.  Withdrawal may not be used prior to the first day of the academic term.

Not Required

Transfer

May be used following the conversation where the student-athlete notifies the NJCAA member college they are transferring.

Required

Loss of Eligibility

May be used beginning with the 16th calendar day of the term following the academic term where the student became academically ineligible.

Not Required

Discipline^

An explanation is required of the discipline issue found by the person or body in charge of general discipline at the institution. This is not related to athletic ability, performance or attendance.

Not Required

Failure to Enroll*

May not be used prior to the 15th calendar day of the academic term.

Explanation and details of the reason for release are required.
